Why SuperSport will not air the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations

SuperSport which is the sports channel for many DSTV subscribers has announced that they will not be broadcasting the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 tournament.
In a statement by Multichoice, they confirmed that they won't broadcast AFCON due to their inability to secure rights.
"Supersport Channel will not broadcast the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 scheduled for January 13 to February 11 because the channel has not secured rights to broadcast the tournament," the statement read in part.
They, however, said the AFCON 2023 games will be available through their partner broadcast stations on Free to Air (FTA) channels on DSTV.
Multichoice further said they remain committed to ensuring football fans continue to enjoy and have unrivalled access.
"Multichoice Africa remains committed to ensuring football fans across Africa continue to enjoy unrivalled access to entertainment and football games available on DSTV and GOTV platforms including the premier league, Laliga, Serie A, Zambian Super league and any more of Football's most prestigious competitions," they said.
On December 23, 2023, Businessman Nazir Jinnah said the upcoming AFCON is a big economic opportunity for East African countries.
Jinnah said AFCON offers a unique opportunity for Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania to raise their profiles and promote local tourism as they are jointly set to host the games.
"Like in Europe, Kenya can use this opportunity to revolutionise the sports sector- to the extent of having sports tourism," the hospitality Industry mogul said.
Jinnah said sports can not only be an avenue for promoting development and social cohesion but also create employment for millions of young Kenyans, who are jobless.
According to statistics by the Kenyan Government, the unemployment rate in Kenya is at 12.5 per cent, with a majority being drawn from 75 per cent of the country’s youthful population.
“Countries like China, which successfully leveraged the 2008 Beijing Olympics to modernise and revitalise its capital, stand testament to the transformative power of sports,” Jinnah said.
