In the 2023 KCSE exams, 201,133 individuals received a mean grade of C plus or higher, securing admission to institutions.

The 2023 KCSE exams were given from October 10 to November 24, 2023, to a total of 903,260 applicants.

Under the new funding model, public universities will accept all students who met the minimal grade requirement for admission to university, according to Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu.

More pupils than those who received direct admittance in 2022 qualified for universities through the KCSE exams in 2023.

Approximately 173, 345 candidates in 2022 received a mean grade of a C plus or higher, making them eligible to enroll in institutions.

Machogu claims that the government's new grading scheme, which only covers two required subjects in determining the mean grade, is to blame for the hike in 2023.

"'This is as a result of the new grading system that reduced the number of subjects required to compute a mean grade,'' the CS said when he released the 2023 KCSE examination results at Moi Girls Eldoret.

A new grading scheme that was introduced by the Ministry of Education last year became effective with the 2023 KCSE exam.

The mean grade could be calculated using only two necessary subjects, under the revised grading scheme.

The only two courses that will be required under the new grading scheme for the 2023 KCSE exam are mathematics and one language (either English, Kiswahili, or Kenyan Sign Language).

Knec took into account the candidate's top five subjects in addition to the two required subjects.

It is anticipated that the new reform measure will raise the number of students who are eligible for diploma programmes, universities, and TVET training at the certificate and artisan levels.
