Boondocks Gang is a musical collective made up of Mr Mukuruweng, Xray (Utaniua) and Odi wa Murang'a (Mr ThoboThobo) were recently interviewed by a radio station and they gave some rather interesting insights into the Kenyan music scene as it currently stands.

For starters, did you know the group that gave you such hits as Rieng and Mboko Haram first met in church?

Aye, they first met while at Sunday School and even had a gospel song that they made and released but it gained very little traction. This also means that Boondocks Gang as a collective is conversant with the gospel scene.

And while discussing their music, they were compared to gospel artistes, many of whom feel they are leading Kenya's youth astray. Boondocks Gang did not mince their words when they responded to this saying that gospel artistes are Bitter Bettys because they cannot make money.

To drive home their point, they referenced Willy Paul's recent move from gospel music to secular music and said he is a gospel artiste who recently released a song called Lamba Nyonyo which by any stretch of the imagination is a sexually suggestive song.

They even spoke about their obsession with Punyeto and they explained that he is a guy they know who works as a construction worker at Thika Clayworks. They went on to say that whoever has a different opinion of it has their own definition but they did admit that Punyeto is the Arimis brand ambassador.

But back to their gospel tip, Xray revealed that they were even invited to a church youth group's fundraising. They were put up in a tent and they drew in the crowd needed to raise the cash.

Ngoma ya kwanza ilikuwa gospel but sa unajua gospel hailipi. Unless kama unaifanya kama Willy Paul.

They were asked about Ringtone who is a gospel artiste with money and they didn't mince their words saying,

Kama akona dough kuna mtu anaumia basi.

Kuna wasee wengi tulianze nao, magospel artistes na hata sahii ukiwaangalia hakuna pahali wameenda.
