Meet The Only Kenyan To Receive The Prestigious 2018 Queen’s Young Leader Award

Douglas Mwangi is one man Kenyans are really proud of. At such a young age, he is about to shock the world with his moves.

Douglas will be the first Kenyan to receive the prestigious Queen’s Young Leader Award come June 2018. In an interview with Adelle and Shaffie on Breakfast with the Stars, Douglas explained how he came about winning this golden opportunity.

douglas on kiss

It has been a back and forth process chatting with the Queen’s leader team and I didn’t expect to win it, so I got a call that was like a 15 minutes call. I actually thought it was a regret call at the end, but they dropped the mic and said Douglas you have won the Queen’s Youth Leader Award. I was so excited, shouted everywhere. I’ve never been that emotional in my life, I just felt honoured.”

But before this opportunity came along, Douglas has had his very own fair share of struggles. Coming from Mathare, he had a tough journey growing up to a point it took him years to complete school.

Growing up in the slums is not easy, very limited resources and I can remember vividly, I was in class 7, I spent almost a term home just because I didn’t have a Math text book. The school was collecting books. After clearing Primary School, there was nothing much to do and my mother couldn’t afford to take me to High School. It happened that I started hanging out with this gang around and life wasn’t easy and I almost lost my life and that’s when I realized that I needed to change my life and then learned how to shave hair at 14 years and I secured employment in one of the barber shops in Mathare. Then I realized that this was not the life I want to live. I used to make a thousand bob a month so I started saving and I went back to school in 2004. It was on and off, so I finished in 2010. I spent like six years in High School. I even did construction work.”

They say there’s always light at the end of the tunnel. Douglas worked tirelessly to make sure that the people of Mathare are educated and can learn a few skills here and there. So he decided to start and organization, Oasis Community Center, which is a digital community hub for youth and children in Mathare.

douglas on Kiss

So what is the Oasis Center about?

It’s a youth organization and we seek to empower marginalized community from Mathare with ICT skills, entrepreneurship skills, we also have a community library and we have a kid’s corner where kids can play with toys but the main aim for the kids corner is to encourage them to use technology at an early age and then they can also read. That’s basically what we do at Oasis Mathare.”

When asked how he managed to start it, he explained, “I started while I was working with DOT. Joining Dot gave me a very nice platform to work with the youths in Mathare so I was deployed to Mathare slums to train them some entrepreneurship and ICT skills and I have always wanted to do something for the community but I didnt know how and I didn’t have the resources. So I knew once I got the resources I’ll do it coz I had the plan but I didn’t know how to start. So I met this group while I was teaching them. There’s this guy called Jimmy who started a business with nothing, so I realized that you don’t need to have cash to start something. Late 2013, with my laptop and friends, we thought we should start something and in 2014 we had our first space along Juja Road, then moved from the place because the private developer came in and took that place. And that’s how it started.”

Kambua’s New Song Will Bring Tears To Your Eyes…Actually, You Will Cry Like A Tot

Kambua Manundu is a beautiful gospel singer and TV host of Bambika. She is among the few respected female gospel artiste who has not had any controversies or drama. Her music career has been successfully growing top a point she has been releasing one hit song after another.

Unlike many gospel musicians this lady’s music has proper content to a point you wont be able to question if she is saved or not. This year she has been releasing songs about things that are so dear to her heart.

“I have had intensely painful seasons” Kambua’s tough year in a song

Apart from music, Kambua is also known to be all about women and girls. She has recently been working on a project with AMREF Health Africa to help create awareness of what is happening to Samburu girls.

Here some of the photos;

FGM and early marriages seems like a myth or something that doesn’t happen anymore or rather has stopped but apparently it is still practiced. In her new song she addresses the issue and have young girls express how they want to be someone in the future. When the song starts there is like a candle lighting session and Kambua explained;

“This candle lighting ceremony happened in Wamba, Samburu County- a day before 350 girls graduated into womanhood. Culturally this rite of passage ends with the ‘Cut’, #FGM. But #AMREFHealthAfrica introduced the Alternative rites of passage, #ARP, where the elders and community at large instead bless the girls to continue on with their education, free of the cut and early marriage. The candles signify kindling the light of education. Now ain’t that something!”

She was more than excited to release the video since she is passionate about this change. She posted saying;

“#KAZANA video is out on YouTube *Link in bio*. Change doesn’t happen overnight, but if we all add our voices to things we believe in, then change is inevitable!”

Here is the video of the song;

Here are some of the reactions people had to the song;

Ashton daniel: together we stand for girl child. amen blessed song kambua

Obed Ira: Nice song kambua 😍

Kiki KAMAU: Those girls are soooo pretty. Children will love the song too. I have a soft spot for anything to do with children. God bless you.

Ruth Mwikali: It’s a lovely song…powerful message😍👍

Imani Ngeru: Great initiative Kambua!! 🙂

Exclusive! King Kaka Talks About Working With The Legendary Necessary Noize

Kennedy Ombima normally referred to as King Kaka or Sungura is a famous Kenyan rapper. He has dropped a new hot song Cheza Chini featuring the legendary group Necessary Noize (Wyre and Nazizi). It has come as quite a shocker for him to get this group to work with him. In an exclusive interview with Kiss FM he talked about the song;

“Haina deeper meaning, its just cheza chini. Its just a happy song the whole idea ni kujibamba tu. As much as we do all these songs we need to entertain our funs as well.”

His main plan was to work with Nazizi and Wyre because they are music legends. He just picked up his phone and asked them to get on board and they agreed.

King Kaka

“They are very humble people cooperative and am learning from them as well. I just called them and I told them I have this particular song in mind I would like you on board and they were like yeah lets do it.”

King Kaka’s New Song With Wyre And Nazizi Is An Absolute Banger!

King Kaka is also not so sure if necessary noise is back. All he had to say was;

“I don’t know their plans maybe you can just call them and ask. But what I know is that they are working on a couple of materials together. Am glad to put them back on the map but they have been working even separately.  It would be nice really to see Necessary Noize is back, I would be very happy.”

He shot the video in some random club in Buruburu. All he wanted to achieve in this video is simplicity at its best because the song is for the common mwananchi.

“I am a simple guy. I wanted simple people.The song is for the kawaida ordinary Kenyan who go to ordinary clubs.”

King Kaka was not ready to reveal about the projects he is working on yet. He said;

“Brace yourself..I may not say much but brace yourself.”

Elani Finally Speaks Out About The Huge Loss They Made In A Concert

Elani is a Kenyan music group that has a reputation for dropping hits after hits. Their voices gel with each other in the most glorious of ways. This year though, they have been very quiet and have not been seen or heard of in any events or concerts. The last time song we heard a new song from the group was last year. But wait no more, hungry fan, they are about to release a new album.

In an exclusive interview with Kiss 100, Maureen Kunga of Elani talked about the loss they made when they held a concert. Apart from the financial loss they made, she believes that it was good for the brand and that they learn’t a lot of lessons from it:

“Although it was a financial loss it really helped the brand so its not something that we regret. Our take away was more in terms of planning, it was our first time planning a big event. Its not such surprise that we made a loss. But the main lesson that we learnt was, believe in yourself regardless of the outcome. If you’re doing it for the right reasons it is okay because at the end of the day yes we went through financial losses but it was a concert that we did whole-heartedly but the loss didn’t discourage us to try again.”

Keep Calm, Its A Hit! Elani Set To Release Album? Producer Leaks Some Info

The election also affected their work and income in a huge way. The political atmosphere and the tension, put a bump on everything, not just them but on the country as a whole. But Maureen is positive about the future and hopes things will fall back in place and peace may reign.

“We should look forward to leaving the worst behind us is and hope for a better future. But the main thing is reconciling and moving forward.”

Maureen admits that they have heard a lot of rumours about Elani but they have learnt how to have a thick skin and ignore what people say about them. They have never been really affected with any rumour that they have heard to a point it shutters them into pieces. She said;

“You learn how to focus on your things and the work that you’re doing and your purpose regardless of what people are going to say or do. Nothing has really ever struck out as to a point where we are like..ohh my goodness this is so horrible. I cant believe someone said that!”

Just like any music group, Elani is no exception to people disagreeing and having different ideas. They face many challenges working as a group but they have learn’t how to overcome them. She continued:

“Wanting to do one thing and someone else wanting to do another thing was a huge challenge but we have learn’t how to be patient with one another. Sometimes we might go back and forth without finding a solution but now we have sort of come to terms with everyones individual personality. And as long as you respect each other, then its alright. At the end of the day people are doing what they are doing or believing what they are believing for the good of the group no one is pushing for an agenda so that the group can fail.”

They have come to understand each other which has really worked out for them. They now receive each others ideas with respect and honor each others word.

“I am human I fall in love and out of love when I fall down I will get hurt. During the break up I was hurt and I cried. It wasn’t working for me and I wasn’t happy. I had every right to move on, I need happiness and peace. Holding on causes more pain than letting go”

nicah the queen1

When asked if she has ever received any freaky or crazy things in her dm. She explained that as much as she is beautiful she has never received anything freaky.

“I think people who view your page and see how you are dressed and what you post thats when they can start dming you crazy stuff. When all your quoting is the bible, encouragement stuff and posting decent photos I don’t think people will dm you those things. The only thing I get is like; you are very beautiful, some want to take me out for lunch but sijawai pata extreme things. If you pose naked you will get sexual attention.”

Nicah also talked about how people have always attacked her songs saying that they are encouragement songs not gospel. She acknowledges that she is not perfect and she sins like everyone else, she is just saved by grace. People just assume she doesn’t get hurt.

Valentine Njoroge Opens Up On Her Journey In Radio And Starting Her Own Show

Valentine Njoroge is a sex writer and feminist writer based in Nairobi. She has been in the media for over 10 years and has shocked many with her consistence in sharing her ideas on women and sex life.

During an interview with Adelle Onyango on Breakfast with the Stars, Valentine walked us through her journey in the media industry, revealing that she has even driven a truck so as to not stay idle.

So how did she end being a radio presenter?

It just happened. I wanted to be in the media space. I was in Uni in the States and I was like ok I’m going back home and I want to be on TV, and I’ll be Kenya’s Oprah. I came back home and I was kinda depressed. I had come out of an abusive relationship, so I came and didn’t really want to talk about it and my mum could see something was off with me. So she was like, you’re not going to sit at home and do nothing because you are educated and I have instilled in you a thirst for the better things in life, but you’re not driving my car. Get into a matatu and go find a job and then she was like I want you to close the store for me. So there I was driving an FVR Isuzu truck.”

She continued, “So I worked there for like 2 months, and my friend Nini Wacera was working at Capital FM. So I went in to say then met with the Head of Capital and she was like we are hiring. Do you want to do a voice test. I did it, she hired me on the spot. So I would be in Gikomba all morning and in the afternoon, I would go to Capital, where I started training with Pinky Ghelani, then I got the graveyard shift and would do the night show. My mum didn’t get these watchman hours but my dad understood. Then Kiss FM hired me and said they’d double my pay, so I moved out of home, got my own place with a little meko and a mattress, then radio happened.”

Valentine went ahead to reveal that she now has a tv show, where she will be talking about sex and relationships.

She said, “I have a show that is about sex and relationships and sexuality as well, which I think is such a challenge for many of us to deal with, coz sexuality is about your emotions and your self management, human management which we are not taught when we were being brought up.”

Real Househelps Of Kawangware Star Truphena Reveals Why She Left The Show (Audio)

Aisha Nour Khathwibu popularly known as Truphena is one talented actress who has cracked our ribs with her role in a local series, Real Househelps of Kawangware.

Many of her fans were confused on why they havent been seeing her in the show in the latest episodes.

In an interview with Adelle and Shaffie on Breakfast With the Stars, Truphena revealed she left the show because she wanted to grow.

truphena 2
I left real househelps of Kawangware because I want to grow and as they say if you want to go fast, you go alone and if you want to go far, you go with people. So mimi naona speed yangu haiendani na ya watu wengine alafu pia I know what I want in life. My mission in life is to bring people together as a peacemaker. Unajua nikiona mawazo yangu na yako hazikaribiani, nakuachilia nikienda mbio,” she explained.

When asked where she is at the moment or rather what she’s currently doing after leaving the show, she said, “For now, I’m not in TV, but I’ve started a YouTube channel although I haven’t started feeding it with content. The things people are seeing on Youtube are just the intros. So there’s something I want to start officially and I’m in the process of planning everything.”

truphena 1

She went ahead to share how she started acting, and she confessed that she’s also fallen victim of the many NOs that people receive.

I went for an audition. I’ve been going for auditions, they turn you down and at some point you get tired and start something else. But acting is a calling. If someone wants to be where we are now, they should know that acting is a lot of work. One should be dedicated to it just like any other job because it pays the bills and changes our lives.”

So how did she deal with the NOs?

Audition ni kama interview. You’ll get there and you’ll be told to do something, so you are the only one who knows what you want. Ukieka uoga saa zile unataka job, nani atakusaidia? Go for auditions believing in yourself and if you believe your job, don’t be lied to by a producer that they’ll give you a job. Be prayerful and believe in God,” she said.

truphena 3

Adelle went ahead to ask her if life was difficult after she left the show and she said,

Si ati was life difficult. Life bado ni difficult mpaka saa hizi. I’m surviving but I hope for the best and everything happens for a reason. Most of the times I was shooting so I didn’t have time to focus on other things, so from the time I took a break, August, I got time to sit down and mediate about life. After I quit I realized that if I follow the path I choose, I’ll get what I want.”

How Fans Reacted To Sauti Sol’s New Music Video Featuring Patoranking

Sauti Sol have just dropped a new video titled “Melanin” featuring Nigerian star Patoranking. The visual is dope and the tune is catchy. The trio exclusively released the jam on Kiss 100 today morning and I must say that it is a dope jam.

The song, just as its title suggests, is all about appreciating the beauty of African women. It is a sensual visual that was shot by Clarence Peters, the same Nigerian director who worked on their “Shake Yo Bam Bam” video.

Fans have taken to Twitter to express their views on the release, with the reviews being generally positive. Here’s what Kenyans had to say:

Jua Cali Reveals How It Was Working With Wyre In Their New Hit ‘Vile Naskia’ (Video)

Jua Cali and Wyre recently released a brand new song called ‘Vile Naskia’. So far, it has been well received by fans and as we all know, the two never disappoint when it comes to releasing hot jams.

Well, they are among the most celebrated artistes in 254.

In an interview with Kiss TV, Jua Cali opened up about how it was working with Wyre revealing that Wyre is an artiste he would gladly do an album with.

He said, “Ilikua easy and fun, yaani ukituona kwa studio we are just having fun. Si ata umeskia vibe ya hiyo song? So you can imagine how the recording was. Ilikua tu fun, easy, lyrics zilikua zinakam tu. Wyre ni artiste naeza make album na yeye anytime.”

When asked what it takes to survive in the music industry, considering he’s been in the industry for years, he said, “It takes a lot of sacrifice and you have to be humble and respect your job. Mtu kama mimi huingia studio kitu 8 ama 9, natoka 10 usiku, just coming up with concepts, record na pia kuomba Mungu ndio akusaidie kuandika ngoma unataka. You also have to have a thick skin especially sahi na social media coz mtu anaeza kaa kwa computer akutukane, so lazima ukue mtu strong mwenye aneza take the good and the bad.”
