Following a recent conversation on The Morning Kiss where university students disagree with their parents on their career choices, it opened a new discussion on why there is an increase in university dropouts in Kenyan colleges.

Giving an example of how parents introduce their learned children with coveted job title such as engineer, professor and doctor, Obinna stated that individuals with low end jobs are even discriminated from family functions as parents are ashamed of what to say to their friends and family.

Going back to universities, a huge number of students are faced with pressure from both the parents and their peers into undertaking a course that’s not in line with their career goals.

Recently a renowned university suspended a huge number of students who drastically failed in their previous exams and also those who regularly don’t attend classes.

From a twitter thread done by campus students, many said that the course they selected wasn’t in line with what they wanted to partake but instead wanted to please their parents and home community at large as it earns respect to their name.

Despite taking those “A-class” courses, most of them revealed that they dropped out as early as the second semester in their first year.

From the ministry of education, parents are advised to support their kids in whatever career path they choose to take as every individual is unique in their own way.
