Famous celebrities who have spoken about their bipolar disorder

The stigmatized disorder has been embraced by some few celebrities

Bipolar disorder, formerly known as manic depression, is a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings.

The mood swings include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression).

Depression arises feelings of sadness or hopelessness and loss of interest or pleasure in most activities.

When your mood shifts to mania, you may feel euphoric, full of energy, or unusually irritable.

These mood swings can affect sleep, energy, activity, judgment, behaviour, and the ability to think clearly.

However, the lifelong disorder can be treated under medication from a qualified doctor or psychiatrist.

This brings us to the list of famous celebrities that have come out of the closet on living with the disorder and have done their best to embrace themselves throughout the process.

1. Saumu Mbuvi

Mike Sonko’s daughter, Saumu Mbuvi, disclosed that she has battled the bipolar condition for over 6 years.

In an interview with Massawe Japan, Saumu explained that her condition got worse when she started dating her now ex-boyfriend Anwar Loitiptip.

She was always in hospital after one or two weeks.

2. Mariah Carey

The superstar singer spoke out about receiving her bipolar diagnosis

"Until recently I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose me.

It was too heavy a burden to carry and I simply couldn’t do that anymore. I sought and received treatment, I put positive people around me and I got back to doing what I love — writing songs and making music.”

3. Selena Gomez

Most recently, Selena Gomez has been talking about her bipolar diagnosis and treatment experience.

In her new documentary "Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me," which dropped on November 4th, Selena reportedly reveals that she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder after she went through a period of psychosis in 2018.

She also shared that she struggles with finding the right medication, but eventually, Selena found a psychiatrist who helped her get back to herself.

4. Halsey

Before she became a singer, Halsey had a breakdown at age 17 and tried to commit suicide.

She was diagnosed with bipolar disorder shortly after that time.

“It was a lot of things happening at once, with a complete lack of direction,” she told Glamour

5. Demi Lovato

The singer and former Disney Channel star, who also struggled with bulimia and addiction, became a spokeswoman for the mental health awareness campaign Be Vocal in 2015.

"I could either not talk about my stint in rehab and hope that it went away, or I could talk about it and inspire people to get help for their issues, as well, so that’s exactly what I did," she told Woman's Health.
