A man in Homa Bay has died by suicide after attempts to kill his children.

Police said the children were hospitalised in critical condition after they were allegedly poisoned and stabbed by their father, Ronnie Ochieng' before he died by suicide inside their rental house in Homa Bay.

The minors are aged between 3 and 9 years.

It is alleged that Ochieng' and his wife had domestic differences.

Police said preliminary findings had shown he stabbed the children in the stomach using a kitchen knife after he allegedly tried to poison them with Triatix which is used in controlling ticks.

Police who visited the scene found an empty bottle of a pesticide which they believed was used by the deceased.

The deceased locked himself at his rental house together with the four children where he poisoned and stabbed them before committing suicide by consuming the pesticide.

Homabay police boss Samson Kine said two of the children were stabbed and two poisoned but they survived.

“The children survived and we hope they will pull through,” he said.

He said they had been informed the man had constant wrangles with his wife which prompted her to report the matter to administrators.

When the wife returned home, she found her husband locked inside the house and upon pushing the door she found the children and her husband already dead.

The children were rushed to the hospital where they were later transferred to the Homa Bay County Referral Hospital in critical condition.

The deceased's body was moved to the county referral mortuary awaiting postmortem.

Kine said the matter is under probe.
