Kisumu Governor Anyang'Nyong'o has indefinitely suspended demonstrations in the county.

Nyong'o announced the suspension on Wednesday.

This announcement by the governor comes hours before the planned protests by Azimio on Thursday.

The governor said the Azimio National Council in consultation with the Kisumu county executive had resolved that the Kisumu team will join demonstrations in Nairobi.

"The people of Kisumu should remain committed to the aspirations of Azimio and its campaign for a better Kenya," the governor said.

"I would like to appeal to the people to work in tandem with enforcement officers to maintain peace and security in our county."

He said the people of Kisumu have spoken loudly and clearly on these very serious matters and have delivered their petitions to the government.

"We have delivered the message and expressed our resolve to stand with the Azimio La Umoja leader, Raila Amollo Odinga in his quest for Justice," he said.

Kisumu has experienced violent protests, that saw protesters clash with the police and some properties destroyed.

A third-year Maseno University student was also shot dead during the peaceful protests that turned violent.

Some goons descended on UDA offices in Kisumu’s Milimani Estate where they also set ablaze a car.

On Monday, a man was killed during the protests in Kondele area as the protests turned ugly with police trying to stop the protesters from accessing the CBD.

The body of the victim was taken to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral hospital's mortuary.

Some residents and motorists also claimed that they had lost personal items to looters who barricaded roads along Mamboleo Kondele route, at Nyamasaria along the Kisumu Nairobi highway and in some of the estates.

The opposition has called protests every Monday and Thursday to put pressure on the government to lower the cost of living.

They have also been pushing the government to halt the reconstitution of the IEBC.

The Azimio brigade also wants the commission to open the servers to confirm who validly won the 2022 presidential elections.
