Sophia Wanuna quietly quits KTN after 14 years

Media personality Sophia Wanuna quietly parted ways with Mombasa Road-based media house Standard Group after 14 years.

Wanuna who was the deputy editor Broadcast division at KTN is yet to make public her departure from Standard Group.

Credible reports reaching our Entertainment desk detail that Wanuna tendered her resignation to the Standard Group management, citing personal reasons.

In July 2021 Sophia Wanuna was appointed as the new Broadcast Content Editor in an acting capacity, replacing Peter Opondo who had been fired.

In an internal Memo authored by the then Editor in Chief Ochieng Rapuro, Wanuna’s appointment took effect on July 15, 2021.

“Last Friday, Our Editor Broadcasting Peter Opondo left the company to pursue other interests.

“I have therefore appointed Ms Sophia Wanuna to take charge of this segment of our operations until further notice.

"The editorial staff is hereby notified to collaborate with Ms Wanuna for purposes of keeping our broadcast operations and our promise to deliver quality, in-depth and timely content to the consumer on course. Ms Wanuna takes charge beginning July 15, 2021” read the internal Memo in 2021.

Her exit from KTN come days after her colleague Sharon Momanyi also left KTN after 10 years. Momanyi joined KTN in 2013 as an intern.

Through her Twitter, Momanyi reminisced on life as an intern before rising to a Feature Editor.

 "2nd April 2013: Young intern joins KTN newsroom with lofty ambitions of telling stories that change people’s lives.

2nd April 2023: Leave with nothing but gratitude for the trust of those that have shared their stories with me & a platform to make a difference. What a decade!" she wrote on Twitter.

In 2018, Momanyi got promoted to the position of Features Editor at KTN, days after she won the Media Council of Kenya's Annual Journalism Excellence Award (AJEA) - Journalist of the Year, 2018 award.

She joined a list of prominent TV personalities who have left KTN recently.

Other prominent names that have left Standard Group recently include; Lofty Matambo, Frida Mwaka, Ben Kitili, Brian George Otieno, Roselyn Obala, Ibrahim Karanja, Brian Obuya, and Nicholas Wambua, and Brenda Kerubo among others.

On the radio side; Standard Group has lost the following talents Billy Miya, Linda Oriaso, Ali Hassan Kauleni, Mwalimu, Emmanuel Mwasumbe, Mbaruk Mwalimu, and Beatrice Maganga are all said to have found a new home at Radio 47 among others.
