Kenyatta University suspends classes after tragic accident that killed 11 students


Kenyatta University has suspended classes for three days in honour of the 11 students who died in a grisly road accident while on their way to Mombasa.

In a statement released on Tuesday by Deputy Vice-Chancellor Prof. Waceke Wanjohi, the school will set up Help Desk at Business Students Services Centre (BSSC) Room 151, to offer support and assistance during this challenging time.

“Following this unprecedented tragedy, the University Management has decided to suspend all classes for three (3) days beginning Wednesday 20 March 2024 to enable us to mourn our beloved students,” the statement said in part.

“In the meantime, the University has set up a Help Desk at Business Students Services Centre (BSSC) Room 151, Mobile and Phone No. 0723 352 483 or 020 2310709 to respond to queries as we offer support and assistance during this challenging time,”.

The internal memo authored by Prof. Wanjohi also gave an update on the student who survived the nasty road accident.

He noted that those who were critically injured had been airlifted to Nairobi for further treatment.

“It is with profound sorrow and sadness that I inform the University community of the tragic road accident involving our students from the Department of Health Management and Informatics in the School of Health Sciences yesterday 18 March 2024 in which we lost eleven (11) students.

“Eleven (11) students were also critically injured and are being airlifted to Avenue Hospital. Parklands: and another sixteen (16) with minor injuries are being transported to the same Hospital. Arrangements are also being made to transport the remains of the eleven (11) students to Kenyatta University Funeral Home along Thika Super Highway,” he added.

On Tuesday, seven critically injured Kenyatta University students were airlifted to Parklands Avenue Hospital in Nairobi.

Nine additional students will be evacuated to the same hospital later. They were among 42 students injured after their bus crashed with a trailer at a Pipeline near Maungu on the Mombasa Nairobi route.
