President William Ruto has ordered swift investigations after a deadly fire killed 17 pupils at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri County.

The Head of State also consoled parents who lost their loved ones in the said fire.

"Our thoughts are with the families of the children who have lost their lives in the fire tragedy at the Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri County. This is devastating news. We pray for the speedy recovery of the survivors.

"I instruct relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate this horrific incident. Those responsible will be held to account. The Government under the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of the National Government is mobilising all the necessary resources to support the affected families. Poleni sana," the president said.

On Friday, Kenyans woke up to the sad news of 17 pupils who had died following a fire incident at Hillside Endarasha Academy.

15 of them are said to have been confirmed dead at the scene while two died while being rushed to the hospital.

14 others have been rushed to hospital with serious burns. 

The cause of the fire is yet to be established.

National Police Service Spokesperson Resila Onyango confirmed the incident.

“We have 16 pupils dead and 14 injured. We are investigating the cause and take necessary action,” she said.

One of the dormitories housing the students was razed down killing the 16.

There are fears that more bodies are likely to be recovered once the scene is fully processed.

Deputy Director DCI John Onyango, Senior Assistant IG, and Director Homicide Unit and NPS Disaster Management Unit are on their way to the school.

The scene has been preserved awaiting the homicide team.

All response teams were sent to the scene to help the situation.

Parents and guardians of the pupils have also been alerted.
