Kangethe then dumped his girlfriend's body (Margaret Mbitu) in a car found at the airport On February 7.

The murder suspect managed to escape from Muthaiga Police Station.

The escape was seemingly planned and unfolded during a meeting with his lawyer.

This has sent shockwaves through the Nairobi law enforcement community, prompting Nairobi Regional Police Commander, Adamson Bungei to describe the incident as "embarrassing'.

A  man who claimed to be his lawyer showed up, and after, he was released and left alone with the so-called "lawyer".

According to the police report, Kang'ethe escaped by running away.

His real lawyers say that they were caught unaware and do not know where he is.

Kangethe, who had previously renounced his American citizenship, was awaiting a court ruling.

He was to face the murder charges in the USA, scheduled for February 9.

In response, four officers who were on duty at the time of Kangethe's disappearance have been taken into custody alongside the lawyer who was present during the escape.

Kangethe, 40, had been detained pending a ruling on whether he should be extradited to face a first-degree murder charge in connection with the death of Margaret Mbitu on Oct. 31, 2023.

Troopers responding to a report of a dead woman in a car at the airport’s Central Parking garage around 6:30 p.m. identified the victim as 31-year-old Margaret Mbitu, who had been reported missing by her family on Monday, according to Massachusetts State Police.
