Bungoma High School has been closed indefinitely after one of its dormitories was reduced to ashes Friday, while students were in class for preps.

Everything including students’ belongings was burnt down in the fire whose cause is yet to be established. Nobody was injured during the 6.00am incident.

According to the affected students, there was an attempt to burn down the dormitory earlier this week but fortunately, the petrol that would have been used was discovered in the dormitory by teachers and investigations launched.

Nothing was salvaged as Bungoma firefighting team arrived when all had been burnt down.

According to the County chief fire officer, Moses Masonya, the inferno that he said was started by arsonists had engulfed the whole building by the time they arrived.

Masonya urged other schools’ management within Bungoma County to be vigilant and call for emergency services immediately they see smoke.

Kenya national union of teacher’s Bungoma branch chairman, Kenneth Ng’ang’a who arrived at the school immediately condemned the act and urged students to use other means to address their grievances.

He said problems in the school arose after students complained of poor leadership in the school management and demanded changes.

Ng’ang’a urged the school to carry out thorough investigations and have the culprits punished. The dormitory housed 200 students.
