The day that many have been waiting is finally here as High court suspends ban on controversial 'Rafiki' film.

Rafiki tells the story of a romantic lesbian relationship, hence the move by the Kenya Film Classification Board to ban it over the homosexual theme.

Justice Wilfrida Okwany said the suspension of the ban by KFCB shall be for a period of seven days only to allow the film director Wanuri Kahiu to submit it for the Oscars award.

Okwany said the film shall be opened for viewing to willing adults only.

Rafiki is a love story about Kena and Ziki who live in a housing estate in Nairobi. The girls are unlikely friends and their fathers are rivaling politicians. When they fall in love and the community find out, the girls are forced to choose between love and safety.

Wanuri Kahiu in her application, argued the ban made it impossible for her to submit the film for review by the Oscars Selection Committee Kenya for consideration in the Best foreign Language Film category award.

The suspension shall lapse on 30th September.

"I am not convinced that Kenya is such a weak society whose moral foundation will be shaken by simply watching a film depicting gay theme," said Okwany.
