The Kenyan government through the ICT ministry has announced they are in the final stages of developing a framework that will be used to tax foreign online streaming media services such as YouTube and Netflix.
The two services which are considered over-the-top services (OTT) will soon be required to declare the incomes they derive from Kenyan consumers.
Communications Authority director-general Francis Wangusi, in an interview with Business Daily said;
“Many countries especially developed ones have policies that guide these services, and that is where we are heading to as a country,”
What that means is an eventual rise in the price of a subscription to Netflix and a rise in the cost of advertising on Youtube. These are interesting times we live in.
