She comes from a humble background, a small family made up of her mother, who is the sole bread winner, and a male cousin who she fondly calls a big brother as she has known him all her life. Leyla is currently a standard eight pupil at St. Teresa’s Girls Primary School and is set to sit for her Kenya Certificate of Primary Education in November 2018.
The young artiste currently calls the Permanent Presidential Music Commission her second home as it is where she is undertaking her vocal classes and also uses the various resources like the audio visual studios at the facility to improve her musical talent to world class standards.
Leyla was first spotted by video director Sammy Dee, who later recommended her to Peter Chuani (commonly known as Dj Pinye), a veteran DJ, Producer and Talent Scout credited with spotting and nurturing top Kenyan musical talents like Octopizzo, Elani and the 2017 Coke Studio Big Break artiste of the year, Band BeCa.
They were shooting one of the episodes of DJ Pinye’s musical shows, Dreams 2 Beats, when Sammy Dee spoke about a talented girl he knows. Pinye got in touch with her mother, he met them, they got acquainted and as they say, the rest is now history.
The 13-year-old's biggest dream is to perform the viral hit song for President Uhuru Kenyatta and represent the country on the national stage.
Leyla describes herself as a sanguine, she is a talkative and jovial girl, her biggest musical influence being the late Whitney Houston, who she grew up listening to on her mother’s favorite radio station, Kiss 100.
She began singing at the age of 3 and has never looked back since then. She is a great vocalist, doesn’t play any musical instrument at the moment but would love to learn to play the piano when she joins secondary school. Her ambition apart from being a successful musician is to be a pilot.
Her debut single is set to come out in October 2018, which is a rendition of a famous Kenyan Patriotic song known as Wimbo Wa Historia, originally written by Enock Ondego.
She was born in Kabati, Naivasha, but now lives in Nairobi’s vast Eastleigh Estate with her single mother and a male cousin.
The KCPE candidate at St Teresa’s Girls Primary School said her biggest musical influence is Whitney Houston, who she grew up listening to on her mother’s favourite radio station, Kiss 100.
