Primary Headaches

  1. Tension Headaches

    • Symptoms: Constant, dull pain on both sides of the head, tightness or pressure across the forehead or on the sides and back of the head.
    • Causes: Stress, poor posture, anxiety, fatigue, eye strain, and muscle tension in the neck and shoulders.
  2. Migraine Headaches

    • Symptoms: Intense, throbbing pain, often on one side of the head, sensitivity to light, sound, and sometimes smell, nausea, and visual disturbances (auras).
    • Causes: Genetic factors, hormonal changes, certain foods and drinks, stress, lack of sleep, and environmental changes.
  3. Cluster Headaches

    • Symptoms: Severe, piercing pain around one eye or on one side of the head, red or watery eyes, nasal congestion, and restlessness.
    • Causes: The exact cause is unknown, but they may be related to irregularities in the hypothalamus and can be triggered by alcohol, strong smells, or smoking.

Secondary Headaches

These headaches are a symptom of another underlying health condition.

  1. Sinus Headaches

    • Symptoms: Deep, constant pain in the cheekbones, forehead, or bridge of the nose, worsens with sudden head movement, nasal discharge, fever, and facial swelling.
    • Causes: Sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses due to infection or allergies).
  2. Rebound Headaches

    • Symptoms: Daily or nearly daily headaches, often worsening in the morning, associated with medication overuse.
    • Causes: Overuse of painkillers or migraine medications.
  3. Caffeine-Withdrawal Headaches

    • Symptoms: Throbbing headache, often worse in the morning, improving after caffeine intake.
    • Causes: Sudden cessation of caffeine intake.
  4. Exertional Headaches

    • Symptoms: Throbbing pain during or after physical exertion, including exercise, coughing, or sexual activity.
    • Causes: Increased blood flow to the skull during physical activity.
  5. Hypertension Headaches

    • Symptoms: Dull pain, often in the back of the head, worse in the morning.
    • Causes: Severely high blood pressure.
  6. Post-Traumatic Headaches

    • Symptoms: Pain that can resemble tension or migraine headaches, occurring after a head injury.
    • Causes: Trauma or injury to the head.
