Jack Ketsoyan told Mamamia's The Quicky podcast that many A-list relationships are actually staged to generate 'hype' around a star's new project.
Jack, who admits to staging two relationships during his career, said that they are a useful way of distracting the public from negative headlines.
While he didn't name names, the Hollywood insider said that it's not uncommon for stars to sign a 'love contract', which requires them to 'date' for at least a year.
He claimed that one major female celebrity got a 'career boost' out of such an arrangement and is now a 'household name'.
Jack - who previously worked for the PMK-BNC talent agency, which represents the likes of Jennifer Lopez - explained that fake relationships were once used to cover up the fact a popular actor was gay, but now it's all about generating 'hype'.
'It's to be able to sell the hype of it - whether [it's] a concert, album... or getting people to go to see the movie, it all about the hype at the moment,' he said.
'With the social media world... nobody is reading magazines as they used to, things spread like wildfire. Hollywood is a very small town and people talk.'
While celebrities are obviously reluctant to say they've faked a relationship, Steve-O has claimed his 'fling' with Nicole Richie in 2006 was just for publicity.
The Jackass star previously told The Howard Stern Show: 'The truth is she wanted some publicity for something other than being skinny.
'It was a big publicity stunt. She would come pick me up - I don't drive - I think she called the paparazzi too. These motherf**kers were coming from all directions.'
British pageant queen Amy Willerton claimed that reality star Joey Essex asked her to have a fake relationship with him while they were contestants on I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! in 2013.
She told Now magazine: 'To be honest that was a horrible experience. If someone says to you, "Hey, let's be in a fake relationship!" You're like, "No, that's not what I want!" I didn't even know that kind of thing went on.'
Meanwhile, former Married At First Sight stars Jessika Power and Nick Furphy have been accused of faking their relationship for publicity.
However, Jessika insists their romance in genuine, telling Daily Mail Australia last week: 'I am sick of defending myself... I'm very happy with Nick, he's a great person and someone I can see myself settling for.'
