'Mum Wants Me To Be A Preacher,' Whispers King Of Comedy Churchill

During an exclusive interview with the Word Is, he explained what is comedy, how comedy in Kenya is and his mom's perception of him in comedy.

"Comedy is not science. You cannot speak of things you can't see, that's why people say we talk ukabila. Like when I was coming here, I saw a church that is called 'Prepare Thy Lord For Thy Lord We Don't Take Coins' you know these are things we see and try to relate to them.

Like nowadays, I see Maasai cows knocking your car mirror and they are like 'hamna ndizi humu ndani.' it's normal things you connect with that you see normally."

Churchill said that there is hope that Kenyan comedy will become international.

"With time, we will get to where Trevor Noah and Steve Harvey are on the entertainment side. Ubaya ya Kenyans ni ujuaji mingi.  You want us to get there immediately. When you hear other people talk about Blacks, it is because that's what is happening there. For instance, one will say, 'for a white girl to run to a black guy's shoulders, there has to be a real problem'. This is because their problem is those races. But ours is Luo and Kamba and there are some stereotypes that people complain about, but eventually grow out of that."

He also revealed how his mom doesn't want him in the entertainment profession.

"The only problem I have is with my mum. She thinks I need shouldn't be doing this. To her, she thinks I need to get a serious job and not entertaining people, because when other people are talking about how their children are doctors, others accountants and lawyers, she finds it hard to explain that her son is a comedian especially in mother-tongue language. She wants me to be a preacher if at all my calling is talking."
