He has joined other celebrities to protest social injustice in America after the much-publicized death of George Floyd, an African American by a Minnesota police officer who knelt on his neck.
In an exclusive phone interview with Kiss100, Mojo said that he has also joined the protests calling for justice over the murder of Floyd.
I’M IN ORLANDO, FLORIDA. THERE ARE PROTESTS TAKING PLACE IN OVER 35 CITIES IN AMERICA. AS WELL AS COUNTRIES AROUND THE WORLD.
Mojo revealed that the news of Floyd’s death was that of “disappointment to see that another black family has lost someone unnecessarily to police brutality and racism.”
The reggae icon added,
“AS WELL AS FEELING FRUSTRATED WITH THE JUSTICE SYSTEM ON HOW THEY HANDLE THESE SITUATIONS. THERE ARE GOOD POLICE AND BAD POLICE. WE NEED OUR LEADERS TO INCARCERATE, PROSECUTE AND SENTENCE THE BAD POLICE WITH NO DELAY.” Mojo explained why the protests are important.
Adding,
WE HEAR THE VOICES CRYING OUT FOR EQUALITY AND JUSTICE. THERE CAN BE NO PEACE WITH OUT JUSTICE. AS THE GREAT MARTIN LUTHER KING JR SAID, “A RIOT IS THE VOICE OF THE UNHEARD. SO IT’S IMPORTANT FOR US NOT TO JUST SING ABOUT THE SUFFERING OF THE PEOPLE OR JUST POST ON SOCIAL MEDIA ABOUT IT. WE MUST PUT OUR SHOULDERS TO THE WHEEL AND STAND IN SOLIDARITY FOR THE YOUTHS BY PEACEFULLY PROTESTING ALONG SIDE THEM. HOPEFULLY OUR VOICES BECOME LOUD ENOUGH TO IMPACT CHANGE.
The reggae music legend admitted that what happened to George Floyd is rampant. Racism is something he has experienced many times.
Mojo told KIiss100,
EVER SINCE I WAS A KID GROWING UP IN SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS. YOU SEE THIS BEHAVIOR NOT JUST IN AMERICA BUT IN MANY COUNTRIES WHEN SOME PEOPLE REACT A CERTAIN WAY TO US JUST PASSING BY THEM TO CLOSELY. BODY AND FACIAL LANGUAGE SPEAKS VERY LOUDLY AND CLEARLY. THE COLOR OF OUR SKIN SUBJECT US TO A CERTAIN RESPONSE FROM LAW ENFORCEMENT SUCH AS RACIAL PROFILING WHICH LEADS TO ESCALATION WHEN COOLER HEADS DON’T PREVAIL.
Asked what he hopes will be achieved at the end of the protests?
Mojo noted,
THE GOAL IS TO HAVE COMPASSIONATE AND EMPATHETIC LEADERS VOTED INTO POWER THAT CAN CHANGE LAWS THAT PROTECT THE POOR AND PEOPLE OF COLOR ACROSS AMERICA AND AROUND THE GLOBE FOR THAT MATTER.
Mojo who has a jam out creating awareness on social justice dubbed Be Free said,
AS PARENTS WE SHOULD NOT CONFINE THE CHILDREN TO WHAT WE LEARNED BECAUSE WE FEAR THE UNKNOWN. WE SHOULD EMBRACE THE POSITIVE ACTIONS OF THE YOUTHS TODAY AS A NEW BEGINNING. A NEW BEGINNING THAT WILL TAKE US INTO THE FUTURE STRONGER AND MORE UNITED AS HUMANITY!
Mojo described the single, Be Free “is about the youths today impacting change for generations to come by being proactive and letting their voices be heard.”
He continued, “It also cautions the leaders today to adhere to the cry of the people and don’t stand in the way of change for the betterment of the less fortunate.”
