President William Ruto has condoled with the Pwani University fraternity following Thursday's accident that claimed at least 16 lives.

The accident occurred when a bus ferrying students to Eldoret for sports games collided with a matatu along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway killing seven students, three staff and passengers in the matatu.

The bus had about 30 people including teachers and students. 

"Our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those who lost loved ones in the Naivasha accident involving a Pwani University bus. It's heartbreaking that some of the fatalities were young citizens with a promising future. We pray for the speedy recovery of the survivors," Ruto said in a statement on Twitter.

Azimio leader Raila Odinga also sent his condolences on Thursday.

The accident which occurred at 11am is said to have been caused by a suspected break failure.

The bus hit at least five vehicles before rolling into a ditch at Kayole-Karai area in Naivasha.

Over 60 people were seriously injured and taken to Naivasha sub-county hospital and some to Nakuru for specialised treatment.

Education CS Ezekiel Machogu said students who were critically injured were transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital while some were being managed at Naivasha Level 4 Hospital theater.

He wished them quick recovery. "I similarly wish a quick recovery to the passengers in the PSV who were injured," he said in a statement.

Rift Valley police boss Tom Odera said that the death toll could rise. 

"The bus rolled and killed 12 on the spot. We may have more casualties," he said.
