Paris Saint-Germain club, also known as PSG, has continued to lose Instagram followers at a very fast pace following the news of the departure of the Argentine attacker, Lionel Messi.

Messi, who joined PSG in August 2021, is reported to have played the last match for the French club on Saturday when it was tied 2-3 with Clemort.

The player who is believed to be one of the best footballers ever in the world attracted many fans at PSG two years ago.

PSG's Instagram page had amassed over 71 million followers but in the past few days has lost over 2.5 million followers.

As of press time, the page had dropped to 68.7 million followers. Many people have linked the decrease in followers of the Instagram account to the recent news of the 35-year-old's departure following the end of the 2022/23 season.

The Argentine star is reportedly aiming to return to his former club, Barcelona, to retire there.

Last month, Barcelona president Joan Laporta said the club was Messi's "home" as they hoped to re-sign the forward this summer.

The Argentinian's contract at Paris St-Germain expires this month, with other reports linking him to Saudi Arabia.

But in an interview with Spanish broadcaster TV3, Laporta said Barcelona could compete with anyone for the 35-year-old's signature.

"History supports us, the feeling is very strong, we have 400 million fans around the world too," he said.

Messi left the Catalan giants two years ago after 21 years at the club but has struggled in his two seasons in France, with fans booing him regularly.
