Police and health officials are investigating a suspected case of food poisoning at a primary school in Garissa County.

One pupil died while three teachers are admitted to hospital following the incident that was reported at Durte primary school on June 17.

A 33-year-old female teacher was first found lying unconscious in her house within the school staff quarters.

The school deputy headteacher who had been informed of the incident told police he looked for a car and rushed her to a hospital in the area.

And on coming back to the school, he found two more teachers and a pupil also lying unconscious.

The child belonged to the first teacher who was found unconscious in her house and taken to hospital.

They were all rushed to Dertu dispensary, where the child passed on while undergoing treatment, police said.

The teachers were later transferred to Garissa county hospital for further treatment.

Officials arrived at the school and picked up samples of food the victims had eaten for analysis.

The body of the girl was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy.

Elsewhere in West Pokot, a lorry driver drowned after his truck was swept by raging floods.

Officials said the area had experienced heavy rains and one Charles Kamau Mbugua aged 56 was harvesting sand when the incident happened on June 16.

His lorry was swept downstream Napowoi River where the body was retrieved hours later.

Officials are investigating the incident.
