Veteran US-based Kenyan musician Hubert Nakitare, popularly known as Nonini has come out to defend himself after netizens attacked him for practically drinking wine while preaching water.

Nonini came under fire following a social media post he had made promoting his shoe brand titled Mgenge 2ru Kicks while ironically rocking American luxury sports brand sneakers, Nike.

Fans voiced their displeasure with the 'Furahiday' crooner noting if he did not have trust in his own brand how was he planning to convince others to cop them?

Internet sleuths were quick to uncover several other posts where Nonini is seen rocking Nike sneakers, a move most feel is damaging to his brand.

Defending himself, Nonini noted it was a marketing move for his SH.36,640 sneakers that are available only on a pre-order basis and people were falling for it.

Sharing on his X account while responding to a netizen who had pointed out how weird it was to market one brand while wearing a multi-billion coveted sports house brand. Especially owing to the fact that now that they're in the same game technically they are competitors.

"Free marketing, see what I did there? Intentional and I knew they would fall for it," Nonini wrote accompanying the post with several laughing emojis.

I'm not sure if he was trying to fool us or himself, perhaps it really is a new marketing strategy that we know nothing about. But his comment appeared to make things worse with keyboard warriors raiding attacks on him.

Nonini launched his shoe brand back in 2021 noting the shoes are made in Italy. His fashion house Mgenge 2ru also produces clothes such as hoodies and jackets which he maintains are purely made in Kenya.

Speaking about his venture back then he said;

“I have always been a fashion guy and I prefer promoting Kenyan brands. I’ve just reinvented what I’ve been doing and right now focusing on fashion and taking it seriously as my career.

 Mgenge 2ru is an apparel brand. We have clothes that include hoodies, jumpers, bomber jackets and watches,”

A pair of Mgenge 2ru 22 edition sneakers retail for SH.36,640 while 21 sock runners go for SH. 31, 840
