Khaligraph lit up a fire that he probably wasn't ready for.

Kenyan artistes have always had one complaint when it comes to DJ's playing music that is from other countries and forgetting to promote their own.

The blame has escalated to include radio and TV presenters who have music shows respectively, saying they make a playlist based on Bongo or Nigerian music.

Khaligraph started this conversation on social media. He went to Nigeria to attend the Sound City Awards as a nominee and also to shoot Gwala ft Ycee.

When he got there, reality hit him and decided to pause a challenge to the Kenyan media personalities.

He posted:

I am planning on Bringing at least 10 big Kenyan media personalities/Radio presenters to Nigeria for a 10 day trip which I myself shall cater for ,I want to see if some of y’all will be recognized by your Nigerian fans or if you even have fans at all here, it would be very sad if you don’t though 😂😂🇰🇪🇰🇪🇰🇪🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬 #respecttheogs

This upset media personalities who are being blamed because they do not promote local Kenyan music. Jalang'o, who is a radio presenter had his take on the subject saying when it comes to picking a radio playlist, presenters have no control.

@khaligraph_jones is planning a trip for presenters and media personalities to NAIJA to see if they have fans there since we play too much Naija and soon the next trip will be to bongo! Yes we don't have fans there but before you start blaming us! Did you know that presenters don't even choose music played on Radio and if they do they have very little say on what goes on air? No you dint! Before music is scheduled on Radio it is researched on and all we do is play !

KISS 100 Adelle Onyango said that it even gets worse when a presenter wants to change the playlist.

In the two stations, I’ve worked for I have never (as a presenter) been in charge of a station’s playlist (and never has a radio presenter been the head of music - in my career that is) In fact we get reprimanded for changing playlists (my experience could be diff for others). Can we influence buzz/hype around an artist yes, do we? Yes. Shall we continue, yes. Have we developed a few tricks around it? Yes. (Some have even created external arms/safe spaces e.g what Kwambox has done)

Naiboi was also quick to jump on the topic in support of Khaligraph, saying that he will also pay for a few more presenters.

So after making calls and confirming how serious the OG is about this, i have decided i will pay for 5more so that's a total of 15. Let's make it a Real experience for them.

The conversation has been going on hard on social media with people expressing mixed reaction on the topic.

What is your take on this?
