It's been one of the most anticipated live-action Disney remakes to date.

And The Lion King is expected to slash box office records this weekend, after taking in a reported $78.5 million on Friday.

Following behind the CGI flick was 2017's Beauty and The Beast, which earned a weekend debut of $175 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Additionally, The Lion King has already surpassed the remake of Aladdin, which premiered in May to $91.5 million.

Although The Lion King will break Disney remake records, it likely won't take on the the final Avengers installment, which claimed $357.1 million during its opening weekend earlier this year.

Still, the film's opening is impressive, despite its lackluster reviews from critics, which proves nostalgia wins in the end.
