The Grammy Awards Academy has added three new categories to their annual awards targeting the African Market.

The Recording Academy has added three new Categories: Best African Music Performance, Best Alternative Jazz Album, and Best Pop Dance Recording.

These new categories will be introduced at the 2024 GRAMMYs, officially known as the 66th GRAMMY Awards.

 

The new category, Best African music performance includes Afrobeat, Bongo Flava, Genge, Afro-fusion, Afro-pop, alte, amapiano, Afro-house, Fuji, and Highlife Ghanaian drill among others.

The 2024 awards will feature a mammoth 102 categories. The 2023 ceremony had a whopping 91 categories, not including eight special awards categories.

 

Additionally, the existing Categories of Producer Of The Year, Non-Classical, and Songwriter Of The Year, Non-Classical will be moved to the General Field.

The Grammy Award, or just Grammy is considered one of the four major annual American entertainment awards, along with the Academy Awards (film), the Emmy Awards (television), and the Tony Awards (theater and Broadway).

In a statement, Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. said; "The Recording Academy is proud to announce these latest Category changes to our Awards process. These changes reflect our commitment to actively listen and respond to the feedback from our music community, accurately represent a diverse range of relevant musical genres, and stay aligned with the ever-evolving musical landscape,".
