It seems American actor Will Smith has a long way to go before putting the infamous Oscar slap behind him.

The 'Fresh Prince of Bel-Air' star in an interview with Trevor Noah on The Daily Show got down into details over what transpired revealing that he had "bottled up" rage that led him to slap comedian Chris Rock on stage.

Will described the incident as "a horrific night".

Speaking to Trevor, Will went ahead to reveal:

"I was going through something that night, you know? Not that that justifies my behaviour at all."

There were many nuances and complexities to it I just - I lost it."

His candid interview with Trevor Noah is actually the first time Will has publicly talked about the incident.

Back in March 2022 during the Oscar's award ceremony Chris made a bad 'GI Jane' joke directed at Will's wife Jada Pinkett Smith and Will didn't take it lightly.

The joke referenced to Jada's current bald hairstyle which she rocks due to alopecia.

Smith stood up, stormed the stage and smacked the comedian right across his face, leaving the audience a little bit surprised as they thought it was a staged stunt.

Speaking to Trevor he admitted that he now understands how shocking that was for everyone.

Will had previously made it clear that his wife, Jada didn't ask him to confront Rock.

"I understand how shocking that was for people... I was gone. That was a rage that had been bottled for a really long time," he told Noah.

"That was a horrific night, as you can imagine."

"I guess what I would say is that you just never know what somebody's going through," he said, without elaborating on what he was referring to.

Will was at The Daily Show to promote his upcoming movie Emancipation, that is set to be released next week, making it eligible for next year's Oscars.

Smith, who did receive this year's best actor award after the slap, revealed that the idea of his new film would be "tainted" during the upcoming awards season by his actions was killing him.

The 54-year-oldwho ended up resigning from the Academy, which organizes the ceremony has been banned from attending the Oscars for 10 years.
