In a recent chat with Vogue's 'Run With Vogue' podcast host Chioma Nnadi, Nicki Minaj opened up about her plastic surgery journey, why she got into it and how motherhood helped her rediscover herself.
The rapper admitted looking back at photos and realizing she was "fine just the way I was,"
Nicki confessed, "I guarantee you, if you change anything on your body and do anything surgical, you’re going to mess up more than likely."
Adding that she was speaking from experiences because, " that’s what happened to me. I could not believe even some of the photos that I didn’t love.”
Touching on what pushed her to the cosmetic surgery corridors the 'Starships' hitmaker noted the pressures she felt, expressing displeasure with being "skinny" and having "a flat butt" and "boobs that didn’t sit high enough."
The rapper's honesty sheds light on the internal struggles many face in a world obsessed with certain physical ideals.
What helped her change her mind? Motherhood!
Nicki who also doubles as an actress revealed welcoming her now 3 year old son(Papa Bear) that she shares with hubby Kenneth Petty became her compass for self-discovery.
“I think pregnancy could’ve played a role because seeing my son did remind me of myself so much. My real self,” she said.
Candidly adding, “And it made me think why didn’t I like this? So weird. But seeing old photos, being able to look at old photos again made me realize, ‘These old photos are beautiful.
I used to want a bigger butt, and now I look back and realize how silly that was,” she said.’”
It seems the arrival of her little one helped her find her true north. Now she is embracing her natural beauty, steering away from the plastic era noting that sometimes, less truly is more.
So, what's Nicki's advice to others contemplating a similar journey?
"You’re going to look back on it and say, ‘Why the hell did I do that?’" That's her advice with those fighting with feelings of self doubt.
She encourages everyone to embrace themselves, flaws and all, and avoid the pitfalls of chasing an unrealistic standard of beauty.
“Love your curves, and love your non-curves. There’s nothing wrong with any of it," the multi-award winning singer said.
The “Super Bass” hitmaker added that she used to shy away from looking at old photos of herself, as she was never satisfied with her appearance; now, she shared, “I love the way that person looks physically.”
Minaj recently underwent a breast reduction surgery, slowly reverting back to her original self.
