Frustrated Kenyan youths have decided to occupy Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), located in the Embakasi suburbs a few kilometers south of Nairobi’s Central Business District.

This has caused significant disruption among travelers, the police, and the government for various reasons.

As an international airport with numerous flights landing and departing throughout the day, such disruptions could lead to chaos, particularly for passengers with connecting flights.

Yesterday evening on X, some travelers shared real-time photos of a long queue of cars outside the JKIA gate as people chose to camp inside the airport rather than risk delays with the planned demonstrations and expected heavy traffic.

For those who find themselves unable to catch their flight today, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  1. Flight Cancellations: If your flight is canceled, Kenya Airways will notify you of any changes as soon as possible using the contact information provided during booking. You will be rebooked on the next available KQ flight or an alternative airline to your destination at no additional charge. During delays or cancellations, essential services such as accommodation, meals, and ground transportation will be provided as needed.

  2. Booking Cancellation: If you choose not to travel, you can cancel your booking and receive a refund. Kenya Airways offers refunds for unused or partially unused tickets, depending on the type of ticket purchased. Refundable and non-refundable tickets are available, but even with a non-refundable ticket, you may still apply for reimbursement for applicable taxes, fees, and charges. Refunds are issued in accordance with the fare conditions.

  3. Refund Process: Refunds are processed according to the rules and conditions of your ticket. To request a refund, you must fill out a form indicating whether you want a partial or full refund and provide a brief explanation of why you are requesting it. According to Kenya Airways’ official website, refunds are processed within a minimum of 30–40 days, though credit card refunds may take less time.
