Former NBA star Michael Jordan's sneakers break record

The stars' sneakers were auctioned for Sh. 300 million

Former NBA superstar Michael Jordan just broke another record but this time around it is off the court.

The 60-year-old's Air Jordan 13s which he wore during the 1998 NBA Finals sold just sold for $2,238,000 making this the highest price ever paid at an auction for a pair of sneakers!!!

Guys someone just bought sneakers for Sh300 million! That is insane! I get it that they are signed and worn by the legendary basketball player but that is still insane!

Also, people just be having that kind of money lying around waiting for auctions so that they can collect their favourite items?

I don't even know why I am this shocked a jersey MJ wore at the 1998 NBA Finals sold for $10.1m last year.

Sotheby (the auctioneers) were not surprised by the hefty price the shoes fetched. They had actually estimated the shoes would go rake in anything between $2m to $4m.

They announced the historic sale of the iconic kicks yesterday evening with Sotheby's Head of Street-wear and Modern Collectibles Brahm Wachter saying, "Today's record-breaking result further proves that the demand for Michael Jordan sports memorabilia continues to outperform and transcend all expectations."

MJ rocked the Air Jordan XIIIs sneakers during his last championship season with the Chicago Bulls in 1997-98 against the Utah Jazz.

Jordan had the size-13 shoes on when he scored 37 points in Game 2 of the 1998 NBA Finals series, carrying the Bulls to a 93-88 victory over the Utah Jazz.

The Bulls went on to win the championship, a story told in the 2020 documentary series "Last Dance" about the megastar's last season with the team.

It was Jordan's sixth NBA championship and the fifth time he'd be named the NBA's Most Valuable Player.

Right after the Game 2 victory, Jordan gave the shoes to a ball boy in the locker room as thanks for finding a lost jacket, Sotheby's auction house says.

The "Bred" Air Jordans - short for "black and red" - are the only complete pair of sneakers (left and right pair) worn by Jordan in an NBA Finals game to be authenticated, Sotheby's added.

Jordan won a total of six NBA Finals championships, two Olympic Gold Medals, and numerous other accolades.

He is widely considered one of the greatest athletes of all time.
